i was curious to see who's names come up as to the opinions to this question. who do you think was or is the greatest modified driver of all time? i have been around modifieds and latemodels all my life and alot of drivers have come and gone but who are the ones that made the biggest impression on you throughout their careers. i have my own opinion and it is obvious if you look at my user name it will probably make sence. i am curious to here some of the old names from my youth, that with time you tend to forget.

not so much in the win cloumn but i think the greatest overall modifed driver as well as greatest modified knowledge i say either Les Myers or Dean Pearson those guys know so much on every aspect of modifieds from racing to the actually building and parts aspect there the most well rounded alot of knowledge is in those two

What ever you are drinking please give me a big glass ! Yes Dean is a very nice guy, but come on. His cars look great but are far from the best working, you do'nt need to have big money to have a car that works good. And yes Dean is a nice guy but not even in the top 100 best ever. Les is very very smart and could be in the top 20 as a wrench but not as a driver, he was a good driver but great ? like them or not they both are nice guys. But even in modern days names like Tommy, Andy ,Lou , Brian , Davey, Ron Smoker, and even little old kevy are way better. Let alone all time. Lets go back to the 70s where all was built and they fall way down.

They are both the same, one or the other will run over you rather than go around ya. As far as a wrench Les is as I said very very good, and may be one of the best

I totally disagree. Andy is a very talented guy with about 100 wins. The only idiotic thing that he is doing is driving for Vicki...

The answer is: There is no answer to who was the greatest mod driver ever. Around here, Lou Blaney has the numbers to prove he was the best Oh/Pa modified driver. But comparing Lou to the Eastern and NY guys who race or raced for a living is like comparing apples to oranges. Except for rare occasions and Syracuse, Lou didn't race against guys like Kenny Brightbill, Billy Pauch, Will Cagle, Jack Johnson, Alan Johnson, Bob McCready, Louie Lazarro and a bunch of others. I've often wondered how Lou (or any other local driver) would've made out if he'd raced against the full timers back east.

now i know alot of the older drivers are like wayyy good but I have to say this rex king is averaging a win a week and he is always on top in points everywhere... that is how I think is the best driver!

I think Flyin' Brian Fink is one of the greatest modfied drivers ever because not is he my dad but he doesnt need big money motors or brand new cars or new tires every week to do finish up front

i would have to say les myers is at the top of that list not because he his my dad but if you really new what hes done for the sport in helping so meny drivers eather fixing or building things or set up car or drive there car to help them understand what a car is doing and it really upsets me when people say he would run over them insted of go around them yes dad (les) is very agresive but he only knows one thing out on the racetrack to get to ther front so look back to the early 80s track champ in two div. faverit driver. and driver of the year .the year tricity burnt down.so dont say hes a good mech.and not a driver hes beaten lou blaney ed lynch.and so on meny meny times in my eyes there is NOBODY better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd never disagree that your dad was both a great driver and agressive! He was always one of my favorites. I remember a night at Mercer back in the early '80s when Rege O'Rock tackled him in the pits for some perceived wrong Les had committed to his son on the track. Rege later admitted to me that if he ever hired a driver, Les Myers would be his #1 pick..

Like Lou Blaney, I'd have loved to see how your dad would've fared against the fulltime modified drivers back east or in NY on a regular basis.

i think Brian Fink would be one of the best......not because he is my dad but because he doesnt need the best equipment or the best motor to do good and he knows alot about setting up cars and how to build decent motors

yes me two but unlike hearn , or pauch. or bear foot bob dad (les and lou) didnt have the money backing them any of the top drivers from the area couldnt run with that kind of money no matter how good thats why dad built cars for other drivers to keep him self in racing like myself iam les,s oldest son i also run smallblock mods but the rising cost has sidelined me since 2001 help others build cars just to stay in the shawows of the sport i have always said given the money and a fair chance dad(les) would fly no one would stop him but that will never happen now hes getting up ther in age not that hes old but not to get bounced around a racecar to much any more i know it realy bothers him not that with his talant that some one out there would give him a ride but lets face it this is a young mans sport there looking for some young kid that fearless and by the time he relises the danger hes got it mastered!!!!

DAD (LES) BACK IN THE 80S MADE THE TRIP TO FLORIDA AND RAN WITH THE BEST 10 NIGHTS AND FINISHED IN THE TOP TEN EVERY NIGHT WHEN B.L.WADE OWED DADS CARS BACK TO THAT SUBJECT OF MONEY!!!!!!!! NOONE COULD BEAT HIM BACK HERE AND YES DAD KNOWS HIS WAY AROUND MERCER HE SHOULD AFTER ALLMOST 40YRS RACING ON IT

Lou Blaney, Hands down!!!! who else has won more championships. The really ironic thing is that he never got the fame & glory. His sons, both good drivers in their own right, got & are getting the fame.
Long Live POPS Blaney.

Blackie Watt drove various Mopar Hemi powered modifieds for Joe Pitkavich for years and won a bunch of races including a Race of Champions qualifier in the old Trenton days when the ROC meant something. He also ran at Syracuse in the early '70s and was involved in a nasty crash that made the pages of Stock car Racing magazine. I'd rank Blackie among the top 15 Modified drivers from our area.
