Waynesfield, Ohio 5/27/06 The warm and sunny weather on Saturday brought a great car count and nice audience to Waynesfield Motorsports Park. All six classes of race cars competed throughout the evening. It soon became apparent during hotlaps that Mike Dunlap would not be a winner for the 2nd week in a row with his sprint car. Dunlap flipped multiple times down the front straight and over the banking in turn one. The driver was shaken but no serious injury was reported. During the sprint car feature, #82 Mike Miller clearly ran away from the pack to score his 1st win of the season at Waynesfield. #40 Mark Hery finished 2nd with #23 Kyle Simon coming in 3rd. Heat races were won by Miller and Kyle Conaway. In the mini-sprint main event, #26 Rod Henning looked to be the car to beat as he drove away from everyone until his engine erupted in a cloud of smoke. #20 Jared Horstman inherited the lead followed by #18 Tim Viles and #59 Kirk Jeffries. Viles made one strong move on Horstman but couldn't make it stick. Viles finished 2nd and Jefferies was 3rd. Heats were won by Horstman and Viles. Nate Mailhot drove his #4 white Neon to victory lane in the compact class to mark his 3rd win in 4 weeks. #54f Robert Faulder was 2nd followed by #31 Jeff Kimes. The inversion draw placed #22 Andy Bibler on the front row to start the modified feature. Bibler took to the lead from the start but #2b Darryl Banks was in tow. The man on the move coming from mid-pack was #7b Jeff Babcock. Babcock put on an awesome display of driving as he pasted cars high and low while working his way to the front. Bibler eventually fell to 2nd and Banks went to 3rd as Babcock passed them both and went on to win. Heats were won by Frank Luchini, Buzz Jacobs, and Darryl Banks. Scott Shackelford drove his white #11 Ford Ranger to his 1st win in the truck class. Last years point champion Luke Katterheinrich and last weeks winner Roger Keysor put on one heck of a battle for 2nd place. Keysor ended up crossing the finish line in 3rd. Truck heats were won by Dylan Burkheimer and Bill Harmon. #71c Barney Craig, #74 Lenny Guyton, and #7b Jeff Babcock put on a whale of a race during the stock car feature event. When the checkered flag waved, some sheet metal was bent and tempers were elevated. Babcock scored his 2nd win of the night followed by Craig and Guyton. Heats were won by Craig, Babcock, and Dave Hollon. Within the next couple of weeks, we expect the debut of a new truck at Waynesfield Motorsports Park. 85 Years young, George Place from Delphos, Ohio will again be a competetive racer. Place became famous for wheeling his Hudson Hornet to many victories from the 1940s thru 1960s. Place still operates a machine shop in Delphos and is anxious to try his luck at driving again. Non-Wing Sprints will be paying $1000 to win this coming Saturday. Only 5 car classes will be running at Waynesfield as the modifieds have the week off.

Was Derrick or Darrin driving the 81 truck Saturday? I wasn't there but I've heard from a reliable source that he was ripped off. I know first hand that accidents happen but when someone is taken out.....especially in the lead....shouldn't (at least) they both go to the tail? This is second hand information....but from three different trucks in this division, so I think it would be pretty reliable. Sorry to hear this happen to you yet again Derrick. I also heard that the new inspector told one of the trucks that he had to run an engine (serial number) that matched the year of the truck body......c'mon guys make up your mind and stick to a rule. It was bad enough that you changed the rules two races into the season now you keep adding several things every week. I see the truck count was back up though...that's good news. It was good to see Corey Crithcfield back out there also!

I'm not sure who was driving but I will tell you what I saw. The #11 truck was leading and #81 was making a move underneath him coming out of turn 4. The rear end of 11 got very loose and looked like he was gonna spin out. He caught some traction and shot forward but he was actually facing towards the infield. This caused him to run right straight into the rear wheel of the other truck and bend the rim. The 81 truck spun out and had to leave the track with a bent rim and/or flat tire. The yellow flew for the spin. #11 ended up straight and never slowed or stopped. It was clear to me that #11 was expecting to be sent to the tail but they left him as the leader. The wreck was clearly NOT an intentional "ruff driving" thing. It was an accident. The yellow was thrown because of the 81 trucks damage. It was sad to see 81 put out of the race but anyone who has ever raced has gotten the short end of "a racing thing." Now....that is what I saw happen. As far as the descision made by the track officials....it could have gone either way. That is a call that I'm glad I didn't have to make because I still don't know what I would have done. For those that know me very well...I usually have a strong opinion about everything, but this could have been a coin toss!

The question I would have is how do they tell what year the truck is. We put together several trucks and none of them were the same year. And if you go to a junkyard interchange book I think all of the trucks from 83 or 84 to 93 or 94 were the same for engines except for some bolt on parts that dont go with a motor anyway so what makes the difference unless you tried to match up a completly different model.I know some of the new Rangers have a better front suspension but the newer style engines are not as good as the old 2.3. Guess we will find out Saturday. I know the "INSPECTOR" said something about our bumper untill I showed him that it is thinwall tubing and the bolts are small so it will sheer off if hit so we dont bend the frame and that seemed to be OK. He seems to be easy to deal with so far but only time will tell.

Darren was driving the 81 Truck. Darren was on the outside of the 11 truck, the 11 truck got loose and had to turn to the right to correct his truck and hit Darren in the left rear. I don't think it was intentional, just racing. The 11 truck had tried to pass the 81 2-3 times on the bottom and was loose every time, I think it was bad judgement on his part to try the pass again on the bottom, because he knew it wasn't going to stick. The only thing I was upset about was the driver didn't come to apologize after the race. I've found out over the last 12 years of racing that a heartfelt apology heals a lot of wounds. We were upset at the time, but its over and we will be back next week. As to the reply by Dr. Speedy in the other post about there being a fight between the 2 truck drivers. If either one of my sons would start a fight over a race We would be done racing. I might start a fight but they better not LOL

Roger......Yea I know that all of the Chevy's are the same in that model year range, but some of the foreign makes have different combinations. I really don't think that there was anything wrong with the class to begin with but I'm not the one making the call. Let's just say I'm a new racer and I am setting my truck up to run a carburator....if I'm going to Advanced Auto to get a new carb it will cost me $50 more to buy a 350cfm carb vs. a 500cfm....that's because a 500 is more common. Some things just don't make sense on track rules...it's not just Waynesfield but other tracks too. It seems that some rules make it more expensive to race. Racer50.....I know what you mean about the apology thing....that's why the first week I pretty much ran down to Derrick to apologize to him..........I didn't wnat his dad coming up and punching me....lol It look like I won't be there again this week....I'm still waiting on my Carburator to come in for the new rule and my machinist is on vacation so I can't get an adaptor plate made. So I'll just sit out another week I guess....not by choice...just trying to comply with the stupid new rules.....I could race this week if I could run my carb and a whole 3" adaptor...big whoop. Oh well....have fun guys!

The whole reason that I do this photo thing and the story writing for the track is because of the great friendships that I have made throughout my years around the local racetracks. This keeps me envolved and I continue to make more friends each week. The sportsmanship that I just read is what makes racing the greatest sport of them all! I still give/sell/loan some of my old parts to guys that need them to keep racing also.

Skinnykenny is exactly correct. This is the way it should be in racing. I know that I will always remember things like this whether I'm in the pits and they need parts or on the track and he needs room. What's most amazing is the in week #1 I made a driving mistake and ended up spinnign out Derrick on the last lap....yet he is still willing to help me out, now that is understanding! I'll make sure I get that letter form your wife Derrick.....this should be interesting.
